Backhouse Population

Common ancestor prediction

Single Ancestor

By predicting when the population of a particular name drops to zero, it is then possible to decide whether all occurrences of that name could have descended from a common ancestor. Should the predicted time the population drops to zero coincide with the time surnames first came into use, then the possibility of a single ancestor is very real.

In order to make this prediction, the population of Backhouse's from the various surveys have been plotted on the accompanying graph. A line of best fit has then been added to these data points and the line extended until it crosses the time axis. From the limited data sets currently available this predicted to be the early 13th century, around the time when surnames began to be used. So from this analysis we can say that a single ancestor for all Backhouse's is at least a possibility.
